animals are smart! go bunny!
yesterday went on a tour of a wastewater treatment plant! it was super cool but also SUPER SMELLY!!! so so so very smelly!! torn between awe over the facilities and stuffing my sweater sleeves in my face to stop from gagging and running to hide!! oh man but minus the "unique" smells, it was a very interesting tour. big appreciation for the water works peoples who keep our water clean from contaminants. the raw sewage comes in through the pumping station and into a big holding tank and then it goes into this thing that kind of separates any large particles, almost sort of grinds some it. this is where random things pop up...apparently the staff have seen some pretty creepy stuff. the sewage gets chlorinated sometime in the process too. it goes into a primary clarifier, some of the stuff settles at the bottom. and then it goes into aeration where good bacteria eat some of the stuff in the water. then it goes into secondary clarifiers and then its free to go! the sludge product from the process gets sent into digestors or something like that...some get sent to landfills...some go to farms! (there it was actually something about this use of the biosolids in the news like last week or something). pretty amazing seeing A to B how dirty wastewater from toilets, tubs, and all over can be treated into clean water to send back into our lakes and harbours safely! the sort of gross thing is that when it storms and rains really badly the systems get overflowed and the plant doesn't have the capacity to hold all the excess sewage water so the water gets bypassed through the system straight to the lake and never gets treated!! yuck! so don't go swimming in a beach after a rain storm! =P

i'm suffering from a case of "non-involvement" withdrawal syndrome! the only known case...? me! lol sad i know. =(
pretty flowers in my backyard....
can you believe it? olympics in beijing in less than a month. 08-08-2008. what an auspicious day! a very lucky combination of numbers for the chinese. (apparently tons of couples in china are going nuts trying to book their wedding for that day!) good on beijing but ever wonder how it would have been if the olympics were coming to toronto? if the olympics were only weeks away from showing up at our very doorstep? the mighty IF? toronto could be alive again. this city withering away. if only our governments had gotten their acts together for the bid. olympics in toronto would have been amazing. we need to welcome the world and the rest of canada, to come down to toronto and enjoy our city and see how great we are! the olympics could have helped to revitalize our city's infrastructure... fix up the darn ttc. all the could have beens right? ...well here's to hoping we can pull it together for another go next time around. good luck to beijing and hope their hosting goes smoothly. hello hello to vancouver, will see you in 2010!

The Toronto Night Market was pretty cool...lots of people, knick knacks, and FOOD! Let's not forget the most popular item...smelly tofu! >.< It definitely lives up to its name!
